5.7 Surface Pressure
Please note that the surface pressure of the top plate is lim-
ited to 5 N/mm
2
. If this surface pressure is exceeded, the
sandwich structure inside the top plate breaks down and
the force plate is instantly destroyed. To get a feeling for
this: The full range of 20 kN can be applied on a diameter
of 70 mm.
Fig. 11: Maximum Surface Pressure Diagram
If the force is loaded over a small surface area (high heels,
spikes, crutches, etc.) the maximum surface pressure is in-
creased significantly because of effects in the top layer of
the sandwich.
Tests have shown that most applications with human
beings cannot damage the force plate regardless of
shoe type or use of crutches.
A dropping weight can not only damage the top plate
but also heavily overload and destroy the force sensors.
Appropriate measures have to be taken to prevent
weights from dropping onto the force plate.
