TP-6277 10/0316 Scheduled Maintenance
3.3.4 Oil Change
Change oil as listed in the service schedule. Change oil
more frequently under dirty, dusty conditions. Change
oil while the engine is still warm. See Figure 3-5 and use
one of the following procedures. If the engine oil filter
needs replacement, see Oil Filter Change following.
If an automatic oil drain/oil fill pump is used:
1. Connect the pump to the oil drain hose and open
the oil drain petcock.
2. Start the pump and remove all oil.
3. Add oil using a funnel or other suitable pouring
device. See Specifications—Engine for oil
capacity and Lubrication System—Specifications
for service class and SAE viscosity of oil.
4. Close the oil drain petcock and disconnect the
pump.
5. Start the generator set and check for leaks at the oil
drain petcock and oil filter.
6. Stop the generator set. Wait a few minutes for the
oil to return to the oil pan. Remove the dipstick and
wipe it clean, reinsert it as far as possible and
remove to check the oil level. Add oil, as
necessary, to bring the level up to the MAX mark.

Figure 3-5 Oil Drain Petcock
If an automatic oil drain/oil fill pump is not used:
1. Place the oil drain hose in a container and open the
oil drain petcock.
2. Allow ample time for complete oil drainage into the
container.
3. Close the oil drain petcock.
4. Remove the oil fill cap.
Note: To remove the oil fill cap, rotate the handle
counterclockwise several revolutions and
pull out.
5. Add oil using a funnel or other suitable pouring
device. See Specifications—Engine for oil
capacity and Lubrication System—Specifications
for service class and SAE viscosity of oil.
6. Replace the oil fill cap.
Note: To install the oil fill cap, push the rubber
portion fully into the oil fill tube and rotate the
handle clockwise until the fit is snug.
7. Start the generator set and check for leaks at the oil
drain petcock and oil filter.
8. Stop the generator set. Wait a few minutes for the
oil to return to the oil pan. Remove the dipstick and
wipe it clean, reinsert it as far as possible and
remove to check the oil level. Add oil, as
necessary, to bring the level up to the MAX mark.
Note: Too high an oil level c auses high oil
consumption and engine carbonizing. Too
low a level will damage the engine.
Do not pollute the environment. Dispose of used engine
oil and other contaminants in an approved manner.
