3.11 Generator Service
3.11.1 General
If operating under dusty and dirty conditions, use dry
compressed air to blow dust out of the generator while
the generator set is running. Direct the stream of air in
through the cooling slots at the end of the generator.
The brushes operate at a very low amperage. Abrasive
dust on the slip rings can shorten the life of the brushes.
If poor or insufficient AC output indicates brush
replacement, contact an authorized Kohler service
distributor/dealer to replace the brushes.
Replace the end bracket bearing every 10,000 hours of
operation. Service the end bracket bearing more
frequently if bearing inspection indicates excessive
rotor end play or bearing damage from corrosion or heat
buildup. The sealed end bracket bearing requires no
additional lubrication. Have an authorized Kohler
service distributor/dealer perform all generator service.
3.12 Wattage Requirements
If the rated capacity of the generator set is exceeded, the
circuit breaker located on the controller trips to protect
the generator against damage. A short circuit in the AC
circuit of the craft or simultaneous operation of too many
on-board appliances could cause the generator set’s
controller circuit breaker to trip. If the circuit breaker
trips, the set may continue to run, but there will be no AC
output to the protected circuit.
Before resetting the circuit breaker, turn off some of the
appliances and lights inside the craft to bring the load
down within the rated limits of the set. If the circuit
breaker trips after the load reduction, there is a short
circuit. Turn off the set and have a qualified electrician
locate and correct the cause of the short circuit.
For more information regarding generator set capacity,
see Appendix C—Generator Selection and Wattage
Requirements.
3.13 Storage Procedure
Keep the craft afloat for generator operation during the
storage procedure. Follow the procedure below when
storing your generator set for a long period (3 months or
more).
1. Add fuel stabilizer to the fuel tank of
gasoline-powered generator sets. Follow the fuel
stabilizer manufacturer’s recommendation.
2. Start and run the generator set until it reaches
operating temperature, or about 15 minutes.
3. Stop the generator set.
4. Change the oil and filter. See Section 3.3.
5. Close the seacock and remove the hose at the
seacock. Place the hose in a container having
approximately 3.7--7.5 L (1--2 U.S. gallons) of
coolant/antifreeze. Kohler Co. recommends using
an environmentally friendly potable-type
antifreeze.
6. With a suitable container at the exhaust outlet, run
the generator set until coolant discharges at the
exhaust outlet or until the coolant mixture is
depleted. Do not allow coolant mixture to flow into
the waterways.
7. Stop the generator set.
8. Connect a hose to the seacock. Leave the seacock
closed.
9. Check the coolant level of the heat exchanger and
add coolant if necessary.
Note: Use antifreeze capable of withstanding the
lowest possible temperatures.
10. Drain the fuel completely from the fuel tank or add
fuel stabilizer to the tank, because gasoline fuel
develops gum deposits in storage.
11. Clean the exterior of the generator set and spread
a light film of oil or silicon spray over any exposed
surfaces that may be subject to rust or corrosion.
12. Keep the spark plugs in their holes or seal spark
plug holes with suitable threaded metal plugs.
13. Seal the air inlet, exhaust pipe, and fuel tank cap
with tape.
14. Disconnect and remove the battery. Place the
battery in a warm, dry location for the storage
period. Recharge the battery once a month to
maintain full charge.
15. Select a well-ventilated (not humid or dusty)
location to store the generator set.
16. Cover entire unit with a dust cover.
Note: Run the generator set once a month whenever
possible.
