3.5 Cooling Systems—
Closed/Heat Exchanger
In a closed cooling system, the seawater does not
circulate through the engine but circulates through the
separate chambers within the heat exchanger to cool
the engine water. It then mixes with engine exhaust and
ejects out the exhaust outlet. The coolant capacity of the
engine with heat exchanger is 6.09 L (6.44 U.S. qts.).
All models use a thermostat and coolant recovery tank.
Kohler Co. recommends a solution of 50% ethylene
glycol and 50% clean, softened water to inhibit
rust/corrosion and provide freezing protection.
3.5.1 Filling and Checking
Hot coolant and steam.
Can cause severe injury or death.
Before removing the pressure cap,
stop the generator set and allow it to
cool. Then loosen the pressure cap
to relieve pressure.
WARNING
Checking the coolant level. Hot coolant can cause severe
injury or death. Allow the engine to cool. Release pressure
from the cooling system before removing the pressure cap. To
release pressure, cover the pressure cap with a thick cloth and
then slowly turn the cap counterclockwise to the first stop.
Remove the cap after pressure has been completely released
and the engine has cooled. Check the coolant level at the tank
if the generator set has a coolant recovery tank.
Note: Give special attention to checking the coolant
level. After draining the coolant, allow time for all
air cavities to refill.
Before filling the cooling system, verify that all petcocks
are closed and all hose clamps are tight. Remove the
pressure cap located on the top of the engine and fill with
the recommended coolant until level is just below
overflow tube opening. Fill the tank to just below the
FULL/HOT mark. See Figure 3-8. Maintain the correct
coolant level in the coolant recovery tank. The
ADD/COLD mark indicates full when cold and the
FULL/HOT mark indicates full when hot. Always
maintain coolant level between these marks. Using the
coolant recovery tank markings to check the coolant
level is acceptable, but Kohler Co. recommends
periodically removing the water-cooled exhaust
manifold pressure cap to check the coolant level.

3.5.2 Flushing and Cleaning
For optimum protection, periodically drain, flush, and
refill the cooling system. See Service Schedule for
change interval. Remove the pipe plug water drain
located at the heat exchanger and drain the system
completely. Remove the pressure cap to make draining
easier. Drain, clean, and flush the coolant recovery
tank, if used. There are chemical cleaners available for
badly rusted or corroded cooling systems; follow the
manufacturer’s instructions. Flush the system with
clean water before filling with the recommended
coolant.
