Section 4 Troubleshooting
This section c ontains generator set troubleshooting,
diagnostic, and repair information.
Use the following charts as a quick troubleshooting
reference. The table groups generator set faults and
suggests likely causes and remedies.
Corrective action and testing often require knowledge of
electrical and electronic circuits. To avoid additional
problems caused by incorrect repairs, have an
authorized service distributor/dealer perform service.
NOTICE
Fuse replacement. Replace fuses with fuses of the same
ampere rating and type (for example: 3AB or 314, ceramic).
Do not substitute clear glass-type fuses for ceramic fuses.
Refer to the wiring diagram when the ampere rating is
unknown or questionable.
Maintain a record of repairs and adjustments performed
on the equipment. If the procedures in this manual do
not explain how to correct the problem, contact an
authorized distributor/dealer. Use the record to help
describe the problem and repairs or adjustments made
to the equipment.

4.1 Engine
Problem Possible Cause Corrective Action
Unit will not crank
Weak or dead battery Recharge or replace the battery
Reversed or poor battery connections. Poor
ground.
Check and correct the connections
Fuse blown in controller Replace the fuse
Inoperative start/stop switch Check the switch, replace as necessary.
Inoperative starter solenoid Check the starter solenoid and wiring. Replace
as necessary.
Inoperative starter Attempt starting by direct connection to the
battery. Replace/repair as necessary.
Unit cranks but will not
Out of fuel Replenish fuel
start
Clogged fuel filter Replace the fuel filter
Faulty antidieseling solenoid Replace the solenoid
Air intake clogged Clean or replace the air intake
Faulty spark plug(s) Replace (and regap) the spark plug(s)
Loose spark plug connection Reconnect the wires
Faulty ground (--) connection Clean and retighten
Inoperative electric fuel pump Check the pressure. Replace as necessary.
Inoperative ignition module Replace the ignition module
Weak or dead battery Recharge or replace the battery
Bad fuel mixture Replace fuel; clean the carburetor
Flooded carburetor Wait a few minutes and attempt restart
Choke out of adjustment Readjust the choke/linkage
Engine malfunction See an authorized Kohler service distributor/dealer
Hard starting
Stale or bad fuel Replace fuel
Fuel vapor lock See an authorized Kohler service distributor/dealer
Choke out of adjustment Readjust the choke/linkage
Faulty spark plug(s) Replace (and regap) the plug(s)
Inoperative ignition system See an authorized Kohler service distributor/dealer
Air intake clogged Clean the air intake
