3.4 Fuel System
3.4.1 Specifications
For best results, use only clean, fresh, regular grade
unleaded gasoline. Use fuel with a minimum octane
rating designated by the following:
Antiknock Index—87 (Average of Research Octane
Number and Motor Octane Number)
Kohler Co. recommends unleaded fuel because it
leaves fewer combustion chamber deposits. Never mix
oil with fuel. Gasohol, a mixture of gasoline and ethanol
(grain alcohol), is available in some areas. Ford engines
should operate satisfactorily on gasohol blends
containing no more than 10% ethanol by volume and
having an antiknock index of 87 or higher.
Note: In some cases, adding methanol (wood alcohol)
or other alcohols to gasoline is acceptable. Ford
engines should operate satisfactorily on blends
containing up to 5% methanol by volume when
using cosolvents and other necessary additives.
If not properly formulated with appropriate
cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors, such blends
may cause engine performance problems or
damage fuel system materials. Insufficient data
is available to ensure the suitability of all
methanol/gasoline blends. To avoid jeopardizing
your engine warranty or incurring unnecessary
repair costs, do not use blends that contain more
than 5% methanol by volume or blends that do
not contain cosolvents and corrosion inhibitors.
If you are uncertain as to the presence of alcohol
in the gasoline you are purchasing, check the
label on the pump or ask the fuel station
attendant.
Note: Discontinue use of any gasohol or
alcohol/gasoline blend if engine performance or
fuel system problems occur. Do not use such
fuels unless they are unleaded.
Use fresh gasoline to ensure it is blended for the season
and to reduce the possibility of the formation of gum
deposits which could clog the fuel system. Do not use
gasoline left over from the previous season.
3.4.2 Fuel Filter
The in-line filter connects to the inlet side of the electric
fuel pump. The fuel filter has a sealed housing. The
element is not removable for cleaning. At the
recommended interval, replace the fuel filter. Drain fuel
from the fuel line/hose into a suitable container to
prevent spillage into the bilge. Add pipe sealant suitable
for marine use to threads and install. Use hose clamps
at each end of flexible hose. See Figure 3-7.

3.4.3 Carburetor/Choke Lubrication
The only required maintenance is carburetor and choke
linkage lubrication at the specified interval using white
lithium grease or equivalent.
3.4.4 Carburetor Adjustments
Carburetor is factory set. No adjustments are possible.
