3.5.8 Seawater Pump Belt Tension
Use a belt tensioning tool to adjust the engine-driven
seawater pump belt. See Specifications—Engine for
belt tension specifications. Use the following procedure
to adjust the belt.
1. Remove the belt guard by releasing the wing nuts.
2. Install the belt tension tool (Figure 3-15) between
the longest span of belt. See Figure 3-16. Check
the tension using the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. If a belt tension gauge is not available, use the
following procedure as a guide. Perform the test at
the midpoint of the longest span of the belt. At this
point, the belt should deflect about 10 mm (3/8 in.)
using a force of 9 kg (10 lbs.). Check a new belt
after 10 minutes of operation.
4. If tension is not to specifications, loosen the pivot
and adjustment screws using a 1/2 in. wrench.
Note: There are different specifications for new
and used belts. A belt is considered used if
run for 10 minutes or more.
5. While prying the seawater pump outward, tighten
the adjustment screw when reaching the proper
tension.
6. Recheck the belt tension and adjust as necessary.
Remove the belt tension gauge. Tighten the pivot
screw.
7. Replace the belt guard.
Rotating parts.
Can cause severe injury or death.
Operate the generator set only when
all guards, screens, and covers are in
place.
WARNING
Servicing the generator set when it is operating. Exposed
moving parts can cause severe injury or death. Keep
hands, feet, hair, clothing, and test leads away from the belts
and pulleys when the generator set is running. Replace
guards, screens, and covers before operating the generator
