Chapter7.Removingandinstallingservercomponents
Thischapterprovidesinstructionsonhowtoremoveandinstallhardwareforyourserver.Youcanexpand
thecapabilitiesofyourserverbyaddingnewhardwaredevices,suchasmemorymodules,PCIecards,or
otherserveroptions,andmaintainyourserverbyreplacingthefailinghardwaredevices.Ifyouarehandling
aserveroption,refertotheappropriateinstallationandorremovalinstructionsinthistopicalongwiththe
instructionsthatcomewiththeoption.

Beforeremovingorinstallingservercomponents
Attention:Staticelectricitythatisreleasedtointernalservercomponentswhentheserverispowered-on
mightcausethesystemtohalt,whichmightresultinthelossofdata.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,always
useanelectrostatic-dischargewriststraporothergroundingsystemwhenremovingorinstallingadevice.
Systemreliabilityguidelines
Tohelpensurepropersystemcoolingandsystemreliability,makesurethatthefollowingrequirements
aremet:
Eachofthedrivebayshasadriveinit,otherwiseafillerandelectromagneticcompatibility(EMC)shield
installedmustbeinstalled.
Iftheserverhasredundantpower,eachofthepower-supplybayshasapowersupplyinstalled.
Thereisadequatespacearoundtheservertoensuretheservercoolingsystemworksproperly.Leave
approximately50mm(2.0inches)ofopenspacearoundthefrontandrearoftheserver.Donotplace
objectsinfrontofthefans.Forpropercoolingandairflow,installtheservercoverbeforeyouturnon
theserver.Operatingtheserverforextendedperiodsoftime(morethan30minutes)withtheserver
coverremovedmightdamageservercomponents.
Youhavefollowedthecablinginstructionsthatcomewithoptionaladapters.
Youhavereplacedafailedfanassoonaspossible.
Youhavereplacedahot-swapdrivewithintwominutesofremoval.
Youoperatetheserverwiththeairbaffleinstalled.Operatingtheserverwithouttheairbafflemight
causethemicroprocessortooverheat.
Workinginsidetheserverwiththepoweron
Guidelinestoworkinsidetheserverwiththepoweron.
Attention:Staticelectricitythatisreleasedtointernalservercomponentswhentheserverispowered-on
mightcausetheservertohalt,whichmightresultinthelossofdata.Toavoidthispotentialproblem,
alwaysuseanelectrostatic-dischargewriststraporothergroundingsystemwhenyouworkinsidethe
serverwiththepoweron.
Youmighthavetohavetheserverturnedonwhilethecoverisoff,tolookatsystem-boardLEDsorreplace
hot-swapcomponents.Followtheseguidelineswhenyouworkinsideaserverthatisturnedon:
Avoidwearingloose-fittingclothingonyourforearms.Buttonlong-sleevedshirtsbeforeworkinginside
theserver;donotwearcufflinkswhileyouareworkinginsidetheserver.
