Precautionsbeforeperformingthecheckoutprocedure
Beforeyouperformthecheckoutprocedurefordiagnosinghardwareproblems,reviewthefollowing
information.
•Readthesafetyinformation.See“Safety”onpagev.
•DynamicSystemAnalysis(DSA)providestheprimarymethodsoftestingthemajorcomponentsofthe
server,suchasthesystemboard,Ethernetcontroller,keyboard,mouse(pointingdevice),serialports,
andharddiskdrives.YoucanalsouseDSAtotestsomeexternaldevices.Ifyouarenotsurewhethera
problemiscausedbythehardwareorbythesoftware,youcanuseDSAtoconfirmthatthehardwareis
workingproperly.
•WhenyourunDSA,asingleproblemmightcausemorethanoneerrormessage.Whenthishappens,
correctthecauseofthefirsterrormessage.Theothererrormessagesusuallywillnotoccurthenext
timeyourunDSA.
Important:IfmultipleerrorcodesorlightpathdiagnosticsLEDsindicateamicroprocessorerror,theerror
mightberelatedtothemicroprocessororthemicroprocessorsocket.
•BeforeyourunDSA,youmustdeterminewhetherthefailingserverispartofasharedharddiskdrive
cluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstoragedevices).Ifitispartofacluster,youcanrunall
diagnosticprogramsexcepttheonesthattestthestorageunit(thatis,aharddiskdriveinthestorage
unit)orthestorageadapterthatisattachedtothestorageunit.Thefailingservermightbepartofa
clusterifanyofthefollowingconditionsistrue:
–Youhaveidentifiedthefailingserveraspartofacluster(twoormoreserverssharingexternalstorage
devices).
–Oneormoreexternalstorageunitsareattachedtothefailingserverandatleastoneoftheattached
storageunitsisalsoattachedtoanotherserverorunidentifiabledevice.
–Oneormoreserversarelocatednearthefailingserver.
Important:IftheserverispartofasharedHDDcluster,runonetestatatime.Donotrunanysuiteof
tests,suchas“quick”or“normal”tests,becausethismightenabletheharddiskdrivediagnostictests.
