A video codec is a device or soft ware that enables video com pression and/ or decom pression for
digit al video. This allows faster transm ission over com put er networks or m ore efficient st orage on
com put er disks. Video inform at ion t hat is not im portant for hum an perception is rem oved in order
to achieve very high com pression rat es while still keeping very good visual qualit y.
There is a com plex balance between t he video quality, the quantity of the dat a needed t o represent
it ( also known as t he bit rate) , t he com plexity of t he encoding and decoding algorit hm s, robust ness
t o dat a losses and errors, ease of edit ing, random access, t he st at e of t he art of com pression algo-
rit hm design, end-to- end delay, and a num ber of ot her fact ors.
MPEG- 4 code cs
MPEG-4 is a m ult im edia standard, delivering professional- qualit y audio and video st ream s over a
wide range of bandwidths, from cell phone t o broadband and beyond. MPEG-4 was defined by the
Moving Picture Experts Group ( MPEG), the working group wit hin t he I nternational Organizat ion for
St andardizat ion ( I SO) that specified the widely adopted MPEG- 1 and MPEG-2. Hundreds of re-
searchers around the world contribut ed to MPEG-4, which was finalized in 1998 and becam e an in-
ternational standard in 2000.
Microsoft was involved in t he early developm ent of MPEG-4 but is no longer act ively support ing the
st andard, choosing inst ead t o concentrat e on the Windows Media form at . MPEG-4 can only be
played in Windows Media Player wit h a special MPEG- 4 decoder pack.
Xvid

is a popular free/ open source MPEG- 4 Part 2 codec which works well wit h t he Trackit video
applicat ion.

nal Specificat ion for SMPTE 421M, also know n as VC-1. Form al standardizat ion of VC-1 represent s

docum ent ed, extrem ely stable, easily licensable, and accepted by the indust ry. The com prehensive
specificat ion delivers high definit ion cont ent across any m edium and t o any capable device.
Windows Media Player as part of its installat ion, includes WMV codecs.
AVI
Audio Video Interleave is a m ultim edia container form at which allows synchronous audio- wit h-
video playback. The AVI file cont ains data which can been encoded by alm ost any codec, including
Full Fram e ( uncom pressed) , I nt el Real Tim e ( I ndeo) , Cinepak, RealVideo and MPEG- 4.
ASF
Windows Media Video files are in m ost circum st ances encapsulat ed in the Advanced Syst em s For-
m at ( ASF) container form at. The file extension .WMV typically describes ASF files that use Windows
Media Video codecs.
