2 Safety Instructions
Otto Bock does not recommend the use of a wheelchair/ mobibility base with seating system/ buggy for
transportation in a motor vehicle. Our mobility aids are so designed as to be easily maneuverable, light-
weight and functional which is in contrast with the requirements a safe seat must fulll for transport in a
motor vehicle. Furthermore the application of additional wheelchair tie-down systems and occupant re-
straint systems involves many possible causes of defect and an increased safety risk, which is not the case
when using the vehicle anchored restraint systems . Otto Bock highly recommend whenever possible, that
the wheelchair user transfer to the seats installed in the motor vehicle and use the corresponding vehicle
restraint systems. In the event of a motor vehicle collision, Otto Bock cannot assume responsibility for any
physical impairment caused to the users of Otto Bock products, if the occupant restraint and tie-down
system have been correctly applied. As the risk of injuries to the user of the wheelchair in transportation
can only be reduced, but never completely removed.
The following safety instructions must be observed:
The wheelchair/ the mobility base/ the buggy may only be used in motor vehicles in a forward
facing seating position.
The wheelchair/ the mobility base/ the buggy may only be used as specied in the General
Instructions for Use Manual.
The safety of the user who is transported in a wheelchair/ mobility base/ buggy is to a consid-
erable extent dependent on the person who is responsible for this transport. Ensure that this
person is trained correspondingly and that he/she knows and applies the relevant prescriptions.
It is of particular importance that this person has been informed on possible risks. If this is not
possible, the aforesaid applies to the attending person.
Wheelchairs/ mobility bases/ buggies which conform to ANSI/RESNA WC 19 or ISO 7176-19
standards have been subjected to a crash test in a forward-facing mode using a wheelchair
anchored pelvic belt to which a vehicle anchored shoulder belt was connected.
When using the wheelchair/ the mobility base/ the buggy for transportation in a motor vehicle,
an independent pelvic and shoulder belt must be applied as the person restraint system. This
will reduce the probability of colliding with parts of the vehicle should the vehicle be involved
in a collision. The restraint belts must conform to the standards described in section 3. If the
wheelchair user chooses not to use such a wheelchair anchored belt restraint, an independent
vehicle anchored 3 point occupant belt restraint must be used.
The 4-point tie-down straps used to anchor the wheelchair/ mobility base/ buggy to the vehicle
must conform to the standards mentioned in annex B and be compatible with the anchor brack-
ets on the wheelchair/ mobility base or buggy.
Other belts that assist with the postural positioning of the user in the wheelchair/ seating sys-
tem/ buggy may be used in addition to the occupant restraint. But under no circumstances,
should they be used as a substitute for an occupant restraint system!
Please secure your product in the motor vehicle as described in the section ”Instructions for
Securing the Wheelchair/ Mobility Base/ Buggy in a Motor Vehicle”.
