Basic Settings
7. BASIC SETTINGS
The various programming options of the DRIVE are explained below.
7.1 Menu navigation
The menu is accessed by pressing and holding the left and right buttons simultaneously. The left button
can be used to switch through the settings, the right button conrms the selected menu item. Settings
can be adjusted with the right and left button and are automatically saved after 5 seconds. Therefore,
changes should be made quickly.
7.2 Flow Control
The Protec DRIVE is equipped with a “Flow control“ that allows the water ow to the brew group to be
regulated and also changed during brewing. The resulting brewing pressure can be read off the built-in
brew group pressure gauge and changed by turning the ball handle. This makes it possible to prepare
espresso with different ow and pressure proles.
Pressure proles
To prepare an espresso with the stock ow (regular ow rate of the Protec DRIVE), the “Flow Control“
valve should be opened with 1 ¼ turns. This allows classic espressos to be prepared with a rapid pressure
build-up to around 9 bar. The water output at this setting corresponds to about 10 - 12g per second.
By adjusting the “Flow Control“ before or during espresso preparation, the taste of the beverage can
be inuenced. Closing the “Flow Control“ during pressure build-up allows for a signicantly longer
preinfusion to be integrated into the preparation, suitable for very light or fresh roasts with less
channeling. For more information on preinfusion, see chapter 7.6.
Pressure proles can also be tailored similarly to lever machines or optimize the preparation of different
beverages (Ristretto, Lungo, etc.). To approach pressure proling, it is recommended not to change any
parameters (coffee, grind size, quantity, etc.) except for the “Flow Control“.
The pre-brew chamber of a traditional E61 brew group is not used in the Protec DRIVE to achieve a direct
inuence on the brewing pressure.
Optional accessories
To precisely control the preinfusion and to ensure high repeatability, it is recommended to use a
responsive, ne scale, and a bottomless portalter.
7.3 Brew temperature
The desired brewing temperature can be set in the menu item “Brew Temperature”. This is a target
temperature. The preset default value for the brew temperature is 92 °C (197,6 °F).
7.4 Activate/deactivate steam boiler
With the DRIVE, you can turn off the steam boiler to save energy, especially if you only prepare espresso
drinks. The default setting is „ON,“ and if you want to deactivate the steam boiler, set the value to „OFF.“
Shortcut function: If the right button is pressed 1 x, the steam boiler is activated or
deactivated.
