SECTION 7
FILTER
This section describes the lter function and lter controls.
While in the Prophet-VS emphasis is placed on its unique oscillator section,
let's not forget about the lter. Skillful use of the lter module is also very
important for making interesting sounds. Each voice contains a four-pole
low-pass lter, with controlled cuto and resonance and a dedicated envelope
generator.
The lter is basically a brightness control: the lower its cuto frequency is set,
the duller the tone. Basically, the lter sets an upper limit to the frequencies
which can pass to the amplier. "Cuto" is the frequency below which
oscillator energy is allowed through. The higher the setting, the higher the
frequencies are which pass through the lter. Thus, the brighter the sound.
FILTER BASICS
To dynamically lter the voice timbre during the note, the lter envelope
generator and other modulation sources are used. When triggered by the
note being played, this envelope generator produces changes in the lter
cuto frequency which are analogous to the envelope produced. Several
other modulators can aect lter cuto or the lter envelope depth, such as
velocity or either LFO. For example, velocity can control the depth of the lter
envelope. Understanding the lter means knowing how to use all the cuto
control sources.
The lter envelope can also be used as a general modulation source. The
envelope generator is discussed in Section 8.
