7.1.3 Cable lengths
Segment in subnet
The cable length in a segment of a subnet depends on the baud rate (see
Table 7-1).
Table 7-1 Permissible cable length of a segment in the subnet as a function of the baud
rate
Baud rate Max. cable length of a segment (in m)
9.6 to 187.5 bits/s 1000
1)
500 Kbits/s 400
1.5 Mbits/s 200
3 to 12 Mbits/s 100
1) For isolated interface
Longer cable lengths
If you have to use longer cable lengths in a segment than are permissible, you
must use RS 485 repeaters. The maximum possible cable lengths between two
RS 485 repeaters correspond to the line length of a segment (see Table 7-1). How-
ever, please note that with these maximum cable lengths, no further node is per-
missible between the two RS 485 repeaters. You can fit up to nine RS 485 repeat-
ers in sequence.
Please note that an RS 485 repeater must be counted as a node in the overall
number of nodes that can be connected in the subnet, even if this does not have
its own PROFIBUS address.
