Division into safety-critical and non-safety-critical areas
Nearly all systems contain parts that perform safety-related tasks (e.g. emergency
stop switch, protective grills, two-hand controls). So that the safety criteria do not
have to be applied to the entire control, it is usual to divide the control into two
areas one that is critical to safety and one that is not critical to safety. No
special demands are made as regards safety in the area that is not safety critical
because an electronic fault would not have any effect on the safety of the system.
However, in the safety-critical area only controls and circuits that meet the relevant
specifications may be used.
Important note
Even if the project design of an electronic control ensures that it provides maxi-
mum possible safety by virtue of its design (e.g. as a result of a configuration with
multiple redundancy), the instructions contained in the operating manual must be
adhered to precisely, because it is possible that incorrect handling may put out of
action features intended to prevent hazardous faults and additional hazards may
also be created.
