Shift Inspection
Shiftinspectionsarevisualinspectionsthatacompetentpersonmustbeginpriortoeachshiftduring
whichtheequipmentisused.Shiftinspectionsdonotrequireuntwisting(opening)ofwireropesor
boomingdown.Theinspectionmustconsistofobservationofwireropes(runningandstanding)thatare
likelytobeinuseduringtheshiftforapparentdeciencies,includingthefollowing:

This fact sheet describes the inspection requirements of subpart CC – Cranes and
Derricks in Construction, as specified in 29 CFR 1926.1413. These provisions are
effective November 8, 2010. This document is intended to assist wire rope inspectors
and supervisors.

Apparent Deficiencies – Category I Removal from Service Criteria
• Signicantdistortionofthewireropestructuresuch
askinking,crushing,unstranding,birdcaging,signsof
corefailure,orsteelcoreprotrusionbetweentheouter
strands.
• Signicantcorrosion.
• Electricarcdamage(fromasourceotherthanpower
lines)orheatdamage.
• Improperlyappliedendconnections.
• Signicantlycorroded,cracked,bent,orwornend
connections(suchasfromsevereservice).
IfaCategoryIdeciencyisidentied,thecompetent
personmustimmediatelydeterminewhetherit
constitutesasafetyhazard.Ifthedeciencyis
determinedtobeasafetyhazard,alloperations
involvinguseofthewireropeinquestionmustbe
prohibiteduntil:
• Thewireropeisreplaced.(See1926.1417),or
• Ifthedeciencyislocalized,theproblemiscorrected
byseveringthewireropeintwo;theundamaged
portionmaycontinuetobeused.Joininglengths
ofwireropebysplicingisprohibited.Ifaropeis
shortenedunderthisparagraph,theemployermust
ensurethatthedrumwillstillhavetwowrapsofwire
whentheloadand/orboomisinitslowestposition.
