Particularattentionmustbegiventoallofthefollowing:
• Rotation-resistantwireropeinuse.
• Wireropebeingusedforboomhoistsandlufnghoists,particularlyatreversebends.
• Wireropeatangepoints,crossoverpoints,andrepetitivepickuppointsondrums.
• Wireropeatornearterminalends.
• Wireropeincontactwithsaddles,equalizersheavesorothersheaveswhereropetravelislimited.
Monthly Inspection
Eachmonthaninspectionmustbeconductedasstatedunder“ShiftInspection”above.
Inadditiontothecriteriaforshiftinspection,monthlyinspectionsrequirethat:
• Theinspectionmustincludeanydecienciesthatthequaliedpersonwhoconductstheannual
inspectiondeterminesunder1926.1413(c)(3)(ii)mustbemonitored.
• Wireropesonequipmentmustnotbeuseduntilaninspectionunderthisparagraphdemonstratesthat
nocorrectiveactionunder1926.1413(a)(4)isrequired.
• Theinspectionmustbedocumentedaccordingto1926.1412(e)(3)(monthlyinspectiondocumentation).
Apparent Deficiencies – Category II Removal from Service Criteria
• Visiblebrokenwires:

hasapprovedinwritingforthatspecicwirerope.

shortenedunderthisparagraph,theemployermust
ensurethatthedrumwillstillhavetwowrapsofwire
whentheloadand/orboomisinitslowestposition.

IfaCategoryIIIdeciencyisidentied,operations
involvinguseofthewireropeinquestionmustbe
prohibiteduntil:
• Thewireropeisreplaced.(See1926.1417),or
• Ifthedeciency(otherthanpowerlinecontact)
islocalized,theproblemiscorrectedbysevering
thewireropeintwo;theundamagedportionmay
continuetobeused.Joininglengthsofwirerope
bysplicingisprohibited.Repairofwireropethat
contactedanenergizedpowerlineisalsoprohibited.
Ifaropeisshortenedunderthisparagraph,the
employermustensurethatthedrumwillstillhave
twowrapsofwirewhentheloadand/orboomisinits
lowestposition.
