Annual/Comprehensive Inspection
Atleastevery12months,wireropesinuseonequipmentmustbeinspectedbyaqualiedpersonas
statedunder“ShiftInspection”above.
Inadditiontothecriteriaforshiftinspection,annualinspectionsrequirethat–
• Theinspectionmustbecompleteandthorough,coveringthesurfaceoftheentirelengthofthewire
ropes,withparticularattentiongiventoallofthefollowing:
°
Criticalreviewitemsfrom1926.1413(a)(3)–(see“CriticalReviewItems”above).
°
Thosesectionsthatarenormallyhiddenduringshiftandmonthlyinspections.
°
Wireropesubjecttoreversebends.
°
Wireropepassingoversheaves.
Exception
Intheeventanannualinspectionunder1926.1413(c)(2)isnotfeasibleduetoexistingset-upand
congurationoftheequipment(suchaswhereanassistcraneisneeded)orduetositeconditions(suchas
adenseurbansetting),suchinspectionsmustbeconductedassoonasitbecomesfeasible,butnolonger
thananadditional6monthsforrunningropesand,forstandingropes,atthetimeofdisassembly.
• Ifadeciencyisdeterminedtoconstituteasafetyhazard,operationsinvolvinguseofthewireropein
questionmustbeprohibiteduntil:
°
Thewireropeisreplaced(see1926.1417),or
°
Ifthedeciencyislocalized,theproblemiscorrectedbyseveringthewireropeintwo;theundamaged
portionmaycontinuetobeused.Joiningwireropebysplicingisprohibited.Ifaropeisshortened
underthisparagraph,theemployermustensurethatthedrumwillstillhavetwowrapsofwirewhen
theloadand/orboomisinitslowestposition.
• Ifadeciencyisidentiedandthequaliedpersondeterminesthat,thoughnotpresentlyasafety
hazard,thedeciencyneedstobemonitored,theemployermustensurethatthedeciencyischeckedin
themonthlyinspections.
Additionally
• Theinspectionmustbedocumentedaccordingto1926.1412(f)(7).
• Ropelubricantsofthetypethathinderinspectionmustnotbeused.
• Alldocumentsproducedunderthissectionmustbeavailable,duringtheapplicabledocumentretention
period,toallpersonswhoconductinspectionsunderthissection.
