To select a character for use as a leading digit, enter a single character. The valid choices are:
1 through 9, A, B, C, and D. The encoder will proceed to question “F” to allow you to select
a paging format to assign to this leading digit. This question is very important. The operation
of the encoder is based on the configuration of the leading digit. We will use the following
example to demonstrate its purpose.
Assume your Model 25 was ordered with Motorola Two-Tone, Custom Calls, DTMF, and
Motorola (2+2). Both the Motorola Two-Tone and Custom Calls require a 3-digit entry. The
DTMF and Motorola (2+2) formats require a 4-digit entry. As seen in Table 20, there is no
way to determine which calls belong to which formats. However, when a leading digit is
attached to the beginning of each call, it is very easy to associate each call with a format. The
leading digit must be either 1 through 9 or A, B, C, or D. The leading digit used for each
format does not matter but each character may only be used once, however the same paging
format may be assigned to multiple leading digits. This is very useful for example if your
system contains DTMF decoders that require multiple timings. The DTMF format could be
assigned to as many leading digits as you have timings each leading digit would be
configured to contain a different timing as shown in Table 21.

with different settings.
