I n step 3, you add anot her access point ( AP2 ) to your net work. AP2 is out of range of AP1 , so you
cannot use AP1 for the WPS handshake w ith the new access point . However, you know that Clie nt
2 supports t he registrar funct ion, so you use it to perform t he WPS handshake inst ead.

7.10.9.5 Limitations of WPS
WPS has som e lim itat ions of which you should be aware.
• WPS works in I nfrastruct ur e net works only ( where an AP and a wireless client com m unicate) . I t
does not work in Ad-Hoc net works ( where there is no AP) .
• When you use WPS, it works bet w een two devices only. You cannot enroll m ultiple devices
sim ult aneously, you m ust enroll one aft er t he other.
For instance, if you have two enrollees and one regist rar you m ust set up t he first enrollee ( by
pressing t he WPS but t on on the registrar and t he first enrollee, for exam ple) , t hen check that it
successfully enrolled, then set up t he second device in the sam e way.
• WPS works only with ot her WPS- enabled devices. However, you can still add non-WPS devices to
a network you already set up using WPS.
WPS works by aut om atically issuing a random ly- generated WPA-PSK or WPA2- PSK pre- shared
key fr om t he registrar device t o the enrollee devices. Whether t he net work uses WPA- PSK or
WPA2- PSK depends on the device. You can check t he configurat ion interface of the registrar
device to discover the key the network is using ( if t he device supports t his feature). Then, you
can enter the key into t he non-WPS device and j oin t he net work as norm al (t he non-WPS device
m ust also suppor t WPA- PSK or WPA2- PSK) .
