8.4 The UPnP Screen
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) is a dist ribut ed, open net working st andard that uses TCP/ I P for
sim ple peer- t o- peer net work connect ivity bet w een devices. A UPnP device can dynam ically j oin a
net work, obtain an I P address, convey it s capabilit ies and learn about ot her devices on the network.
I n t urn, a device can leave a net work sm oothly and autom atically when it is no longer in use.

Use t he following screen to configure the UPnP sett ings on your Device. Click Ne t w ork Se t t in g >
Hom e N e t w ork in g > UPnP to display t he screen shown next .

The following t able describes t he labels in t his screen.
Select Device I nfo I f you select M a n ua l I nput, you can m anually type in the MAC address and I P address of
a com put er on your LAN. You can also choose t he nam e of a com puter from the drop list
and have the MAC Address and I P Addr ess aut o-det ect ed.
MAC Address I f you select Manual I nput, ent er t he MAC addr ess of a com put er on your LAN.
I P Address I f you select Manual I nput , enter the I P address that you want t o assign to t he
com put er on your LAN wit h the MAC address t hat you will also specify.
Apply
Click Apply t o save your changes.
Cancel Click Cance l t o exit this screen w it hout saving.

UPnP Select Enable t o act ivat e UPnP. Be aware that anyone could use a UPnP application to open
the web configurat or 's login scr een wit hout entering the Device's I P address ( although you
m ust still enter the password to access t he web configurator) .
UPnP NAT-T Select Enable t o allow UPnP- enabled applicat ions t o aut om at ically configure the Device so
that t hey can com m unicat e t hrough the Device by using NAT t raversal. UPnP applicat ions
aut om at ically reserve a NAT forwarding port in order to com m unicat e with another UPnP
enabled device; this elim inat es the need t o m anually configure port forwarding for t he UPnP
enabled application.
