36.4 Wireless Internet Access
What fact ors m ay cause int erm itt ent or unstabled wireless connection? How can I solve this
problem ?
The following fact ors m ay cause int erference:
• Obstacles: walls, ceilings, furniture, and so on.
• Building Mat erials: m etal doors, alum inum studs.
• Elect rical devices: m icrowaves, m onitors, elect ric m ot ors, cordless phones, and other wireless
devices.
To opt im ize t he speed and qualit y of your wireless connection, you can:
• Move your wir eless device closer to t he AP if the signal strengt h is low.
• Reduce wireless interference that m ay be caused by ot her wireless networks or surrounding
wireless elect ronics such as cordless phones.
• Place t he AP where there are m inim um obst acles ( such as walls and ceilings) bet w een the AP and
the wireless client.
• Reduce the num ber of wireless client s connecting t o the sam e AP sim ultaneously, or add
additional APs if necessary.
• Try closing som e program s t hat use the I nt ernet, especially peer- t o- peer applications. I f t he
wireless client is sending or receiving a lot of inform ation, it m ay have too m any program s open
that use t he I nt ernet.
What is a Server Set I D ( SSI D)?
An SSI D is a nam e t hat uniquely ident ifies a wireless net work. The AP and all the client s wit hin a
wireless network m ust use the sam e SSI D.

access point s and t he wired network.
