IFD500 Series Pilot Guide
4-46 Map Subsystem
anywhere within that exclusion area, the IFD will not generate the
typical FLTA caution or warning alerts. At an airport with no known
runways, the airport exclusion area is a 1nm radius circle
surrounding the airport reference point. For each known runway at
an airport, an exclusion area extends 1nm past each end and
0.75nm on each side of the centerline. Therefore, at an airport with
multiple runways, the airport exclusion area comprises the exclusion
area for every runway.
If FLTA is turned off (via the Setup Page, TAWS Page, or external
discrete), the IFD will issue a CAS advisory message of “FLTA Off”.
FLTA Off Message
Should an FLTA alert be generated, there are several courses of
action that can be taken and the specific scenario will dictate the
optimum avoidance maneuver. For example, sometimes the best
course of action is to immediately add power and climb, yet
sometimes the best course of action may be a small heading change,
especially in the case of a single obstacle off the nose. The pilot in
command must assess the specific circumstances presented and
take action to avoid flight into terrain.
NOTE
FLTA Disabled in External TAWS Equipped Aircraft
In order to prevent conflicting information, when an
external TAWS/EGPWS system is installed*, all FLTA
functionality is turned off (including the “FLTA Off” CAS
message).
*See “External TAWS” field on the “Main System
Config” maintenance mode page.
