2.2 PrincipleofOperation
Ortho and parahydrogen are two spinisomers of hydrogen which occur naturally in the
ratio 3:1 at room temperature. Parahydrogen has a lower ground state energy than
orthohydrogen and therefore the parahydrogen content increases at lower temperatures.
The quantummechanical transition probability from ortho to parahydrogen is very low
unless the gas is brought into contact with acatalyst. In the BPHG 90, hydrogen gas at
roomtemperatureiscooledinthecryocoolertobelow40Kandfedthroughaconversion
chamberwithacatalyst,resultinginaparahydrogencontentcloseto90%.
2.3 InstallationandInitialCommissioning
Installation, initial commissioning, retrofitting, repairs, adjustments or dismantling of the
device must only be carried out by Bruker Service or personnel authorized by Bruker.
