6. Tune regulators
6.1 Introduction
6.1.1 Controller types
The information in this section only applies to GENSET controllers.
6.1.2 Introduction to regulation

If the gensets cannot run stably with the controllers under switchboard control, then you are not ready to tune the
controller's regulators. For unstable or uneven load sharing, check that the droop is the same for all the genset
governors.
The control output for the governor is either relay outputs, or an analogue output (including PWM outputs)). The control
output for the AVR is either relay outputs, or an analogue output, or the AVR is not controlled by the DEIF controller. You can
then follow the steps in the relevant section to tune the regulators.
Primary and secondary regulators
The governor and AVR control each consist of two regulators: A primary regulator and a secondary regulator. The governor
regulators are discussed in detail below. The same principles apply to the AVR regulators.

For the governor, the primary regulator is the governor itself. The governor measures the engine speed, and compares it to
the set point. It then regulates the fuel to achieve the set point. The governor can use proportional or PID control. The
governor must control the engine to reach the set point within a reasonable time when the set point changes. As the primary
regulator, the governor must be correctly adjusted and must stabilise within a reasonable time at a new set point before the
secondary regulator can be tuned.
