10.5 Predictive machine maintenance
and servicing
Simple regular vibration measurements provide the foundation.
These measurements allow early detection of problems long be-
fore a machine needs to be shut down for repair.
The advantages are:
Longer operating life
Longer service life
Fewer and shorter repairs
Lower maintenance costs
All major machinery should be inspected on a regular basis.
It is advantageous to establish a sequence according to which
these machines are checked.
It is usually sufficient to measure the vibration of each bearing po-
sition in the horizontal direction. The individual measuring points
should be marked for good repeatability.
The higher the speed of a machine and the more important a ma-
chine is, the shorter the regular inspection intervals (weekly, fort-
nightly, monthly) should be.
The machines should always run under the same operating con-
ditions when measurements are taken.
The measurements – at least the cumulative value of vibration
velocity and spike energy value (for gearboxes and machines
with roller bearings) – must be documented for each machine and
entered in a trend curve.
If the measured values are too high or an increasing trend can be
seen, the machine concerned must be analysed in more detail
(see Chapter 10.4 Interpretation of vibration measurements) in
order to identify the cause and to be able to plan maintenance
in good time.
