Erasinglostorforgottenpasswords(clearingCMOS)
Thissectionprovidesinstructionsonhowtoeraselostorforgottenpasswords,suchasauserpassword.
Toerasealostorforgottenpassword,dothefollowing:
1.Removeanymediafromthedrivesandturnoffallconnecteddevicesandthecomputer.Then,
disconnectallpowercordsfromelectricaloutletsanddisconnectallcablesthatareconnectedtothe
computer.
2.Removethecomputercover.SeeChapter9“Installingorreplacinghardware”onpage89.
3.LocatetheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumperonthesystemboard.See“Hardwarelocations”onpage27.
4.Movethejumperfromthestandardposition(pin1andpin2)tothemaintenanceposition(pin2and
pin3).
5.Reinstallthecomputercoverandconnectthepowercord.SeeChapter9“Installingorreplacing
hardware”onpage89
.
6.Turnonthecomputerandleaveitonforapproximately10seconds.Then,turnoffthecomputerby
holdingthepowerbuttonforapproximatelyfiveseconds.
7.Repeatstep1andstep2.
8.MovetheClearCMOS/Recoveryjumperbacktothestandardposition(pin1andpin2).
9.Reinstallthecomputercoverandconnectthepowercord.
Selectingastartupdevice
Ifyourcomputerdoesnotstartupfromadeviceasexpected,youcanchoosetochangethestartupdevice
sequencepermanentlyorselectatemporarystartupdevice.
Changingthestartupdevicesequencepermanently
Tochangethestartupdevicesequencepermanently,dothefollowing:
1.Dependingonthetypeofthestoragedevice,dooneofthefollowing:
•Ifthestoragedeviceisinternal,gotostep2.
•Ifthestoragedeviceisadisc,ensurethatyourcomputeristurnedon.Then,insertthediscinto
theopticaldrive.
•Ifthestoragedeviceisanexternaldeviceotherthanadisc,connectthestoragedevicetothe
computer.
2.StarttheSetupUtilityprogram.See“StartingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage59.
3.SelectStartup.
4.Followtheinstructionsontherightsideofthescreentochangethestartupdevicesequence.
5.ExittheSetupUtilityprogram.See“ExitingtheSetupUtilityprogram”onpage65.
Selectingatemporarystartupdevice
Note:Notalldiscsandstoragedrivesarebootable.
Toselectatemporarystartupdevice,dothefollowing:
1.Dependingonthetypeofthestoragedevice,dooneofthefollowing:
•Ifthestoragedeviceisinternal,gotostep2.
•Ifthestoragedeviceisadisc,ensurethatyourcomputeristurnedon.Then,insertthediscinto
theopticaldrive.
