Toremovethesystemboard,completethefollowingsteps:
Step1.Readthesafetyinformationthatbeginson“Safety”onpagev,“Handlingstatic-sensitivedevices”
onpage291,and“Installationguidelines”onpage289.
Step2.Turnofftheserverandanyattacheddevices.
Step3.Turnofftheperipheraldevicesanddisconnectallpowercords.
Note:Whenyoureplacethesystemboard,youmusteitherupdatetheserverwiththelatest
firmwareorrestorethepre-existingfirmwarethatthecustomerprovidesonadisketteorCD
image.Makesurethatyouhavethelatestfirmwareoracopyofthepre-existingfirmwarebefore
youproceed.
Step4.Pullthepowersuppliesoutoftherearoftheserver,justenoughtodisengagethemfromtheserver.
Step5.Removethetopcover(see“Removingthetopcover”onpage143).
Step6.RemoveallPCIriser-cardassembliesandadapters(see“Removingariser-cardassembly”on
page179and“Removinganadapter”onpage185).
Step7.Removetheairbaffle(see“Removingtheairbaffle”onpage145).
Step8.Removethefancageassembly(See“Removingthefancageassembly”onpage171).
Step9.Removeanybackplateassemblyoranybackplane(See“Removingthe2.5-inchsimple-swap
backplateassembly/hot-swapharddiskdrivebackplane”onpage241and“Removingthe3.5-inch
simple-swapbackplateassembly/hot-swapharddiskdrivebackplane”onpage243).
Step10.RemovethededicateslotlessRAIDcontroller(see“RemovingthededicatedslotlessRAID
controller”onpage183).
Step11.Removethepaddlecardmodule(see“Removingthepowerpaddlemodule”onpage147).
Step12.Removethememorymodulesandsetthemasideonastatic-protectivesurfaceforreinstallation
(see“Removingamemorymodule”onpage164
).
Note:MakeanoteofthelocationofeachDIMMasyouremoveit,sothatyoucanlaterreinstallit
inthesameconnector.
Step13.(Trainedtechnicianonly)Removeallheatsinksandmicroprocessors,andsetthemasideon
astatic-protectivesurfaceforreinstallation(see“Removingamicroprocessorandheatsink”on
page267).
Note:Donotallowthethermalgreasetocomeincontactwithanything,andkeepeachheatsink
pairedwithitsmicroprocessorforreinstallation.Contactwithanysurfacecancompromisethe
thermalgreaseandthemicroprocessorsocket.Amismatchbetweenthemicroprocessorandits
originalheatsinkcanrequiretheinstallationofanewheatsink.
Step14.Disconnectallcablesfromthesystemboard.Makealistofeachcableasyoudisconnectit;you
canthenusethisasachecklistwhenyouinstallthenewsystemboard(see“Internalcablerouting
andconnectors”onpage127formoreinformation).
Attention:Disengagealllatches,releasetabsorlocksoncableconnectorswhenyoudisconnect
allcablesfromthesystemboard.Failingtoreleasethembeforeremovingthecableswilldamage
thecablesocketsonthesystemboard.Thecablesocketsonthesystemboardarefragile.Any
damagetothecablesocketsmayrequirereplacingthesystemboard.
Step15.1Loosenthetwothumbscrews(locatednearthefrontoftheserver)thatsecurethesystemboard
totheserverand2slidethesystemboardtowardthefrontoftheserver.
Step16.Graspbothsystem-boardhandlesandliftuptheleftsideofthesystemboardslightlyandcarefully
removeitfromthechassis,beingcarefulnottodamageanysurroundingcomponents.
Note:Usethesystem-boardhandlestoliftthesystemboardonly.Donotattempttoliftthe
serverusingthesystemboardhandles.
