Body heat is lost much quicker in
Water than in air so it is vital that the
person is removed from the water as
quickly as possible.

Treatment of hypothermia can be
accomplished by GRADUALLY raising
the body temperature back to normal.
Re-establishingbodytemperaturecanbe
as simple as sharing a sleeping bag or
blanketwithanotherindividual,or
applying warm moist towels to the
individual’sneck,sidesofchestandgroin.
Removewetclothesastheyinhibitheat
retention.Awarmshowercouldbeused
formildtomediumhypothermia,gradually
increasingthetemperature.
Asmuchaspossiblekeeparmsandlegs
outofthewateranddo not attempt to
raise the body temperature too quickly.
DO NOT MASSAGE THE VICTIM’S
ARMS AND LEGS.Massagewillcause
thecirculatorysystemtotakecoldblood
fromthesurfaceintothebody’score,
resultinginfurthertemperaturedrop.
DO NOT GIVE ALCOHOL,whichcauses
lossofbodyheat,orcoffeeandteawhich
arestimulants(andcausevasodilatation)
andmayhavethesameeffectas
massage.
