2-18.7 ELECTROLYSIS AND
GALVANIC CORROSION
1. Saltwaterallowselectriccurrenttoow
fromanodictocathodicmaterials.The
relative position of two metals on the
Galvanic table determines which
material (theAnode) will lose material
andwhichwillremainlargelyunchanged
(theCathode).
2. Therateof wear is determined by the
distance the two metals are apart on
the galvanic table. For this reason
sacricialZincanodesarettedtothe
propellershaftorsaildrivelegofeach
engine to attract any stray electrical
currentawayfromtheBronzepropellers
andStainlessSteelpropellershafts.
3. The rate of electrolysis and therefore
thespeedatwhichthesacricialanodes
deterioratevariesgreatlyandisaffected
byamongst otherthingsthe quality of
the water, the amount of galvanic
protectiononotherboatsberthedinthe
immediatevicinityofthevessel.
4. Any work being done i.e. welding on
surroundingboatswillgreatlyincrease
theriskofelectrolysistoyourvessel.
5.Theriskofgalvaniccorrosionisgreatly
increasedifanysurroundingboatsare
connected to shore power and they
have any neutral or ground faults in
theirelectricalwiringsystems.
6.Yourvesselisprotectedtothehighest
standardsandaslongasthesacricial
anodes are inspected regularly (we
recommendmonthly)butnever longer
thaneverythreemonthsandreplaced
as required no problems should be
experienced.
7. As R & C have no control over the
conditions that the vessel is kept in
or the frequency that the anodes are
inspected or changed. We accept no
liability for any consequential
damage that may occur to the P

and / or any other equipment on the
vessel due to failure of the anodes.
The galvanic isolator interrupts galvanic
circuitwithotherboatsandthedockwhen
your boat is plugged into a shore power
system.ItmaintainsACsafetygroundand
solves the most common cause of
corrosion. Galvanic isolators only protect
againstelectrolysisorgalvanicactionand
againstexcessivezincloss.
Itwillnotprotectagainsta fault condition
where a voltage differential greater than
1.6 volts DC exists.
