Carbon Dioxide
Foropenspillres,thedischargefromthe
hornofaCO2extinguishershouldbefrom
abovethereanddirectedatthebaseof
the ames. This requires getting in close
with the horn to about two or three feet
fromthebaseoftheames.Aslowside-to-
sidesweepingmotionmayalsobeeffective.
For engine compartment res, the
discharge should be directed into the
compartmentthroughanaccessportsoit
isnotnecessarytoopenthecompartment.
CO2 will be effective if the quantity of
extinguishingagentissufcienttodevelop
thenecessaryconcentrationtodisplaceall
theOxygenwithinthecompartment.
For running, dripping res from leaks in
fuellinesortanks,startextinguishmentat
thelowerpartofthereandworkupwards.
Shut off or otherwise stop the leak if
possible.

2-11.4 MAINTENANCE OF PORTABLE
FIRE EXTINGUISHERS
Extinguishersshouldbeexaminedatleast
monthlyforatleastthefollowing:
a.They are located in their designated
places,
b.They have not suffered corrosion or
mechanicaldamage,
c. They are fully charged. Those
extinguishers having pressure gauges
orpressureindicatorsshouldshowthat
pressureiswithintheprescribedlimits;
those without pressure gauges or
indicators,andHalonandCO2portable
re extinguishers, should be weighed
and the weight recorded for future
comparison.
d.Thetampersealshouldbeinspectedto
ascertain that the extinguisher has not
beenoperatedsincethelastinspection,
e.Thenozzleoriceshouldbeunobstructed
andthehoseingoodcondition.
After any use, portable re extinguishers
should be recharged by a qualied re
extinguishing service facility or replaced
withaunitofcomparablesize,ratingand
type.
At one-year intervals, a full maintenance
check shouldbe madeby aqualied re
extinguishing system service facility in
accordance with the manufacturer's
maintenanceinstructions.Atagshouldbe
attached showing the date of such
maintenancecheckandtherecommended
dateforthenextcheck.

FAILURE TO CHECK THE FIRE
EXTINGUISHERS REGULARLY AND TO
PERFORM ADEQUATE MAINTENANCE
COULD LEAD TO MALFUNCTION OR
NON OPERATION AND RESULT IN
LOSS OF LIFE AND / OR THE VESSEL.
