The Lucent Technologies -48V CPS4000/CPS4000 PLUS Cabinet Power System (CPS) is a highly flexible power system designed for cabinet applications where space conservation and environmental considerations are critical. Its 12-inch depth allows for revenue-generating equipment to be located behind the power system in 24-inch deep cabinets.
Function Description:
The CPS supports -48V primary loads up to 75 amperes in a single shelf with an embedded battery disconnect. In a two-shelf plant, it can also deliver regulated +24 volts for secondary loads up to 50 amperes. For loads above 150 amperes, an external battery disconnect is required. The system features automatic load-share circuits that ensure power units apportion the plant load equally, reducing stress on individual units. Power units are self-protected against short circuits and system overloads, automatically resuming normal operation once the fault is cleared. The dual power bus architecture supports applications requiring more than one voltage, eliminating the need for separate power plants.
The -48V CPS is available in four configurations:
- Rectifier Plant: Provides -48V power from zero to 75 amperes in a one-shelf plant, or zero to 150 amperes in a two-shelf plant.
- Rectifier/Ringer Plant: -48V rectifiers provide load power and power for 50/100 VA ringers. Up to two ringers can be installed in a single-shelf plant for redundant ringing power, with additional capacity in two-shelf plants (two ringers per shelf). Ringers feature ROM-based waveform generation and a self-contained ring switch unit that automatically detects a failed ringer and switches in a spare.
- Rectifier/Converter Plant: -48V rectifiers provide load power and power for converters, capable of providing 24 volts at 25 amperes per converter or 130 volts at 4 amperes per converter.
- Converter Plant: Powered from an external -48V source, converters operate from the primary power bus and provide outputs on the secondary power bus.
Control Units:
The system includes a control unit (ES646, ES646B, ES648A, ES648B, ES648C, or ES648BZ Monitor and Control Units (MCU), or an ES647 Alarm Control Unit (ACU)) in single-shelf plants or the initial shelf of two-shelf plants. These units provide plant monitoring, display, control features, and office alarm outputs. The ES647 ACU offers a reduced feature set for economical alternatives.
- MCU Features: Digital meter for plant rectifier voltage or current, green/yellow/red LEDs for plant status, Form-C office alarms, customer-accessible encoder for voltage adjustment, alarm monitor circuit for power minor/major alarms, LED test switch, remote On/Standby control.
- ES648A/B/C MCUs Only: Option for boost charging batteries after a discharge event, local control via RS-232 or RS-485, remote access via an external modem.
- ES648BZ MCU: Identical to ES648B MCU, with remote access via an internal modem (RJ-11 telephone line connector).
Important Technical Specifications:
- Operating Temperature: -40°C to +75°C (-40°F to 167°F) for continuous full power operation up to +65°C (149°F), with excursions to +75°C (167°F).
- Rectifier Power: Increased to 15 amperes at 48 volts for full power utilization of the CPS shelf.
- Control Unit Input: Operational from low 24-volt input to high 48-volt input.
- Rectifier Efficiency: Improved from 87% (typical) to 88.5%.
- Maximum Discharge Current: 85 amperes per shelf; 170 amperes per plant.
- Low-Voltage Disconnect (LVD): 40.5 ±0.5 volts or 42 ±0.5 volts (switch selectable). 100A internal contactor for single-shelf plants or 150A external contactor for two- and three-shelf plants.
- Thermal Management: Incorporates slope thermal compensation. NAFTA Mode (factory-set standard) compensates battery float voltage from +25°C to +75°C. EURO Mode (switch-selectable option for ES648 MCU and ES660C rectifiers) compensates from -20°C to +75°C, providing higher float voltage at low temperatures.

- Distribution Modules: ES610 (12 GMT fuses, max 25A output), ES611 (4 circuit breakers, 2 GMT fuses, max 30A output), ES613 (12 GMT fuses for ringer output).
Usage Features:
- Plug-in Modules: Simplifies plant assembly, repair, and capacity growth without service interruption. Keying prevents incompatible module insertion.
- Remote Access and Control (Option): Dial-up access to report alarms, monitor/adjust plant voltage and current, determine battery condition, and control generator exercising.
- Plant Battery Test (PBT): Allows safe battery health and capacity testing by reducing rectifier output voltage to ~48V, creating a battery on discharge condition.
