StartingtheEngine(cont.)
CAUTION:T opreventdamagetotheengine,donotdepressthe
acceleratorpedal.
2.Depressclutchpedalifequipped.
3.TurnignitionswitchtoONtopreheatthegrid(duct)heater.
NOTE:TheEngineControlModule(ECM)normallydoesnot
energizethegrid(duct)heaterduringhotstarts.However,the
ECMsensesreducedatmosphericpressureathighaltitudeand
couldenergizethegrid(duct)heaterduringhotstarts.
4.WatchfortheWAITTOSTARTlamptogooff.Donotcrank
engineuntilthelampisoff.
NOTE:Observebatteryvoltagegaugewhilecrankingthe
engine.Ifvoltagedropsbelow10Vrechargebatteries,or
replacebatteriesifneeded.
5.WhentheWAITTOSTARTlampgoesoff,turnignition
switchtoSTART .Iftheenginehaspushbuttonstarting,
pressandholdstarterbutton.
6.Whentheenginestarts,releasetheignitionswitchorstarter
button.TheignitionswitchwillreturntoONandtheengine
willcontinuetorun.
7.Withthetransmissioninneutral,releaseclutchpedal,if
equipped.
CAUTION:T opreventdamagetotheengine,iftheenginefails
tostartwithin20seconds,dothefollowing:
•TurnignitionswitchtoOFFandwait2to3minutes.
•Repeatsteps1through6.
•Ifafterthreeattemptstheenginedoesnotstart,determine
thecause.
•Ifstartingattemptsarecontinued,thestartermotorcanbe
damaged.
8.
Warmenginelowidlespeedis700rpm(nonadjustable).
Extendedidlingperiodsshouldbeavoided.Forfurther
information,seeExtendedIdlingPeriods(page54).Check
allgaugesduringwarm-up.
9.Within20to30secondsafterenginestart,engineoil
pressureshouldexceed12psi(83kPa).
CAUTION:Topreventenginedamage–donotincreaseengine
speeduntiloilpressuregaugeindicatesnormal.Ifoilpressure
doesnotreachtheminimumlimitwithin20to30seconds,shut
downengine.
10.Ifoilpressure,atlowidle,doesnotmeettheminimumlimit
12psi(83kPa),stoptheengineandcorrecttheproblem.
