3.2.8.2 How to optimize OCT scan quality
The following advice will help you optimize the OCT scan quality.
3.2.8.2.1 Capture scans quickly and recapture if necessary:
l It is better to capture and then recapture, than delaying and risking the patient's eye drying.
l The benefit of recapturing is that you can ask the patient to sit back and relax or blink between
captures.
l On the next approach, the auto-routines will recall settings, reducing alignment time and the patient's
eye drying.
3.2.8.2.2 Using the auto-routines:
l The auto-routines set the position, depth and focus.
l Do not press any keys while the auto routines are running.
l After the auto-routines have run, you may make manual alignment adjustments. Always pause to
allow each individual adjustment to take effect before making further changes.
3.2.8.2.3 Live OCT positioning:
l Use individual presses on the hand control, see Using the hand control on page32.
l Ensure the live OCT feed is centered and level. Use the center control to adjust the scan position, see
Using the hand control on page32.
l The live OCT feed should fill the width of the touch screen. If there is signal loss on the edges, it could
be that the patient's pupil is no longer aligned. Select Cancel and repeat the alignment process.
l Adjust the position of the OCT to the upper half of the window, but not touching the top of the view.
The higher the position the higher the sensitivity.
l Adjust the focus control to increase the signal strength, see Using the hand control on page32.
Multiple or extended focus adjustments should not be required.
l
If the auto-focus result is not close to best then use the drop down control to Redo auto-focus.
l
Adjust the focus to increase SNR using only a very few individual clicks on the + / - keys. Target live
SNR of 8 or better where there is no opacity, see SNR and OCT scan quality on the next page.
3.2.8.2.4 Minimizing eye dryness:
As with all OCT devices, the captured scans will be poorer if the patient’s eye is dry. The patient's eye may
dry out during alignment. The workflow allows several opportunities for the patient to rest and blink normally
during the session. Ask the patient to blink or rest their eyes at the following points in the workflow. The
patient should remain in the aligned position, when blinking.
l Before capturing the SLO image.
l After capturing an SLO image.
l Before setting up an OCT scan.
l Before capturing an OCT scan.
l After capturing an OCT scan.
Ask the patient to avoiding blinking at the start of the auto-routines. A few seconds after the auto-routines
have started the patient may blink occasionally without impacting the OCT setup.
