Glossary
Glossary contains terms and explanations that are convenient to know when using your
computer.
A
Access Point A relay point that links a computer to the Internet when connecting to a network. When
connecting to the Internet through a modem, the provider uses that relay point. When using a
wireless LAN (Î page 174), the access point also refers to the device that relays the
communication.
Account Refers to the authority used when logging on to Windows (Î page 166), using e-mail or
connecting to the Internet or other network. The Account is used to identify the user.
z In Windows, a separate account is allocated to each user, so Windows function settings,
such as the desktop screen, can be changed to suit each user.
How to create an account: Operating Instructions “First-time Operation”
z In the case of limited accounts, some functions and applications cannot be accessed.
Ad Hoc Mode A wireless LAN communication method in which two computers with wireless LAN conduct
data interactions without using an Access Point (see above).
Data interaction methods between two or more computers using an Access Point are referred
to as “Infrastructure Mode”.
Administrator A user or account (see above) with the authority to use or administer all functions on the
computer or network.
ADSL A type of broadband connection; a service that executes high-speed data communications
along standard analog telephone lines, using high frequencies not used by telephones. An
ADSL Modem is installed at both ends of the telephone line connecting the telephone
exchange station with the regular telephone. High-speed data communications are conducted
between these two modems.
