13 CROSS-SECTIONAL EXPOSURE (OPTIONAL)
This procedure will produce cross-sectional images on
the left or right side of the upper or lower jaw.
Use a bite piece for cross-sectional exposures. Insert the
chin rest and a bite piece into the adapter on the patient
support table.
For edentulous patients or for patients who are unable to
use the bite piece you can use the chin cup or the chin
support. You may have to place a roll of gauze or cotton
between the patient’s jaws to raise the upper ridge to the
correct position.
Ask the patient to remove any spectacles, hearing aids,
dentures, hairpins, and personal jewellery such as
earrings, necklaces and piercings as these can produce
shadows or reflections in the image. The patient should
also remove any loose items of clothing (e.g. scarf, tie)
that might get caught in the unit’s arm structures.
Place a protective lead apron over the patient’s back if
required.
Select the cross-sectional program you require, refer to
section 9.5 “Selecting cross-sectional exposure program
(optional)” on page 28. Select the patient size as
described in section 9.7 “Selecting patient size” on page
34.
Select the image position parameters (jaw half, jaw side,
tooth number/TMJ, collimation, and movement step in the
automatic program) as described in section 9.5.1
“Selecting imaging position for cross-sectional exposures”
on page 30.
