Tomeetgasolineengineemissionrequirements,theKubotagasolineengine
usedonyourReelmasterhasacatalyticmufer.Inadditiontoprovidingsound
dampingandsparkarresting,themuferalsoincludesathreewaycatalystto
treattheexhaustgaseswhicharecreatedfromthecombustionprocess.The
3-waycatalystconsistsofahoneycombcorecoatedwithamixtureofprecious
metals.Thehotexhaustgasesowthroughthecatalystwhereoxidationand
reductionreactionstakeplace.Thesechemicalreactionsreducetheamount
ofCO,HC,andNOxintheexhaust.Twooxygensensorsareincludedinthe
exhaustsystemandareusedasinputsfortheengineECUtomonitorexhaust
systemoperation.Theexhaustexitsthecatalyticmuferthroughthetailpipe
outlet.
RemovingtheExhaustSystem
CAUTION
Themuferandexhaustpipemaybehot.Toavoidpossibleburns,
allowtheengineandexhaustsystemtocoolbeforeworkingonthe
exhaustsystem.
1.Parkmachineonalevelsurface,lowercuttingunits,stopengine,engage
parkingbrakeandremovekeyfromthekeyswitch.Raiseandsupporthood.
2.Raiseandsupporthoodtogainaccesstoexhaustsystem.Allowengineand
exhaustsystemtocoolbeforedoinganydisassemblyofexhaustsystem
components.
3.Removeexhaustsystemcomponentsfromtheengineasnecessary.Discard
allremovedgaskets(items13,17,and/or20inFigure45).
InstallingtheExhaustSystem
Note:Ensurethatallexhaustsystemangesandsealingsurfacesarefreeof
debrisordamagethatmaypreventatightseal.
1.Ensuretoinstallnewgasketsinplaceofallgasketsthatwereremoved.Do
notuseanytypeofgasketsealantongasketorangesurfaces.
2.Assembleallremovedexhaustsystemcomponents(Figure45).
A.Ifexhaustmanifold(item18inFigure45)wasremovedfromengine
exhaustmanifold,installnewexhaustmanifoldgasketsothatraised
ridgesideofgasketismatedtotheexhaustmanifoldontheengine.
B.Duringexhaustsysteminstallation,ngertightenallexhaustsystem
componentsbeforefullytighteninganyofthefasteners.Whentightening
fasteners,secureexhaustmanifold(item18inFigure45)tomuferrst
andthentightennutsthatsecureexhaustmanifoldtoengineexhaust
manifold.Oncetheseconnectionsaresecure,tightenfastenersfor
exhaustoutletandexhaustmount.Finally,securelowerheatshields
andupperheatshield.
C.Ifoxygensensors(item21inFigure45)wereremoved,torquethe
sensorsto41to59N∙m(30to44ft-lb).Plugsensorconnectorsinto
engineharnessafterinstallation.
D.Adjustmuferguard(item26inFigure45)sothatthereis9.5mm(3/8
inch)clearancebetweenexhaustoutletandguardinalldirections.
