CALIBRATION
The instrument is delivered, completely adjusted, factory tested and pre-calibrated with several reference
blends. Nerveless, after the installation of the instrument in the laboratory it is recommended to perform
calibration with reference blends prepared locally.
The instrument is shipped with factory pre-defined list in accordance with the ASTM D1322 / IP 598
Table1:
Standard Smoke Point
(mm) at 101,3kPa
The pre-programmed reference blend name is associated with its standard smoke point value (reference
value). This value will be in future used by the instrument to calculate the lamp correction factor.
To report the smoke point value according to the test method, the non-corrected result must be
corrected by the instrument lamp correction factor. This lamp factor is calculated from smoke point
values obtained by the instrument with two standard reference fuels blends at similar barometric
pressure and bracketing the obtained result. According to the test method, the barometric pressure at
calibration cannot be differing from the pressure entered at the start of the test by more than 0.7 kPa.
All calibrations done on the SP10 are memorized in non-volatile memory.
In order to calculate the lamp factor for every test, the SP 10 automatically seeks in the calibration
database for the reference fuel data corresponding to the above mentioned conditions.
The lamp factor is automatically calculated and reference fuels picked by the instrument to calculate the
lamp factor are reported on each test report.
Because the SP 10 measurement resolution is extremely high and in order to avoid any precision
deterioration in, the SP 10 lamp correction factor has one more significant digit rounded to the nearest
0,001.
If the instrument cannot find reference data exactly matching the conditions, the SP 10 takes the closest
available data for the calculation and prompts the operator to perform calibration.
If the SP 10 calibration database is empty, the test is not possible; in that particular case, the calibration
should be performed first.
Perform calibration
Prepare the reference fuel blends in accordance with the recommendations given in the standard test
method. Use the reagents of required purity. Use only pipette or burettes of class A precision.
Prepare a new wick and candle as described in the test method.
Prepare the candle in the same way as for a normal test.
Press the āSmoke Pointā button on the Main menu.
