section 10: effects tips
10.1 emulating more lexicon-like sounds:
Posted by Jeff Laity:
I wrote a lot of the programs for the Wedge, on which the A6 FX section is based. Here are a few
tips we learned while programming the reverbs.
The Lexicon 480L, which is used on almost every rock, pop, jazz or classical recording mixed
since the 1980s, rolls off almost every reverb program around 6kHz. So if the reverb sounds
artificial, start by reaching for the LPF and setting it a bit lower. I can't remember any programs
on that which roll off above 8k. Many of them roll off around 2kHz.
If the reverb rings, back off on the density and diffusion. They seem to be happiest around 60-
80%.
HiDamp is also cool for more realistic verb. Try setting it lower than the LPF, so that the reverb
gets darker as it decays. However, despite what the manual says, it does function at higher
settings. As the reverb decays, it gets more random, which creates higher frequencies. So you
might want to set it at the same frequency as the LPF.
I would use very little Swirl, if any. It's a chorus on the reverb, but rarely seems to improve it.
Depth is a delay which spreads out the reverb image. (I hope I'm not giving away any secrets
here.) I think the default is 60, which sounds nice.
Early reflection shapes are cool, you can make a reverb which swells up using shape 4.
10.2 panning a delay:
Jeff Laity wrote:
CCJ, I figured out how you can pan the delay signal. Use the DLY:DLY config, set both sides for the
same delay settings, set both outputs for the same output level, then use the send pan to pan
between sending the signal to one delay or the other. Or you can set the input pan to center and
balance the output levels. There's even a mod destination for "DFX SEND PAN", so you can
modulate the delay panning with the mod wheel or whatever.
10.3 effects and clipping:
Anthony Wright pointed out that to prevent clipping in the FX, it’ s a good idea to keep your
sends under 35% (for the really loud patches).
10.4 instant stereo delay:
Jeff Laity wrote:
I have been getting good effects with a simple delay panned to one side. You make a program, then
pan it all the way to the left. Next, dial up the DLY:DLY config, turn the left output mix to 0 and the
right output mix to 100%. Then just dial up a simple delay, no feedback, around 20ms sounds nice
on pads. Poof, instant stereo. You can even modulate this delay for a big stereo chorus.
