Its just Pink noise going into the filters set up in series. I used Filter 2 to take the top end out. The
HPF and the BPF. The key to the sound is the looping VCA envelope :)
On the 808, the clap is made by 2 BPF'ed noise each with their own modulated VCA. One is toppy
and short and the other is around 1300htz with along decay, sorta gives it that reverb sound :)
I used Filter1's resonance to tune the pink noise to the frequencies used on the 808, ie 1300htz
The end result is halfhouse between an 808 and 909 :)
17.11 my first tr-808 sound:
Following these steps will get you an analog bass drum sound.
1. Use any default patch that you desire. If any effects are on this patch, click the EFFECTS
ON/OFF button to turn the effect off. If Unison-X is on this patch, turn it off as well. Click
on the POLY/MONO button until this patch becomes monophonic (the MONO light will
be lit.)
2. View the PRE FILTER MIX. Turn all the oscillators off.
3. View the POST FILTER MIX. Set Filter 2 on about 90. Recall that Filter 2 is the only filter
that self-oscillates. Self-oscillating filters are the key to getting that analog bass drum
sound.
4. View FILTER 2. If any modulation lights are on for filter 2, double click the modulation
to turn them off. Now, set the frequency to about 0.146, with the resonance at 100, and the
envelope 2 around 19. The offset can be around +5. Set keytracking (KEYTRK) to 0, you
want a single pitched note. Envelope 2 will eventually control the hardness of the drum
sound, the offset will control the final pitch.
5. The NEGWAV is handy for getting that Roland TR-808 bass drum sound down. Click
view on ENVELOPE 2, then go to the LEVEL section (soft knob 2). Set this to NEGWAV
instead of POSWAV by turning soft knob 8.
6. Adjust the envelope to taste. I use: 438M attack (LOG 3), D1 is turned off (by turning the
Decay 1 knob all the way to the left), D2 is turned off (by turning the Decay 2 knob all the
way to the left), Sustain at 100, Release at maximum (turn release all the way to the right).
This will result in a quick downward slope that stays at a given value. You can adjust the
attack slope and speed to taste.
Then, go into the trigger menu and set the mode to FRERUN. Go to the dynamics menu,
and make sure everything is 0, with a NORMAL reset setting. (Note: ANALOG doesn’ t
work for this envelope.)
7. Set ENVELOPE 3 up. I use a LOG 3 ATTACK on 2M (the shortest time), a 24M decay 1
time, I turn D2 Level to the max.
D2 Time is a linear stage. For long booms (the “ noise pollution” kind), turn this to around
1.1. For shorter techno drum sounds, turn this stage to around 250ms.
Then, set the sustain at the lowest level. Use a 30ms release 2, and turn release 1 off.
Then, go into the trigger menu and set the mode to FRERUN. Go to the dynamics menu,
and make sure everything is 0, with a NORMAL reset setting.
That should give you a nice TR-808 type drum sound!
