Filter feedback is critical to getting a bit of that acid sound as well, around 10-15 seems best.
Keeping filter 2 open even will sound Rolandish on filter 1 (filter 1 will even sort-of self
oscillate with the filter feedback enabled), but you can adjust to taste.
As posted by him:
Filters in series. 12db HPF into 24db LPF.
resoannce of the HPF around 50.
Cuoiff set at between 30-60 for that more Roland style
oscillator sound - this does aid squelchiness :)
filter feedback at 10-15.
Off course you need to crank the resonance on the
24db Moog filter up!
Sure don't sound so "Moog" anymore!
12.3 feed 12db lowpass into a 24db open filter, with feedback
Colin also found that using Filter 1 in low pass mode, in series with filter 2 (wide open), with
lots of filter feedback, gives a very squelchy sound! The simplest method perhaps for getting
an “a cid” sound.
12.4 filter feedback in place of resonance
Posted by Colin:
If your after a more liquidy smooth sound that characterises the Juno sound. Try substituting filter
feedback for resonance in either Filter when used in series (notch)
Quite a bit thinner, but a nice liquidy filter sound compared to using the Filter's resonance. It sounds
Roland I dare say :)
Off course both filters will not self-oscillate however without kicking in some resonance. Just
remeber that both filters are receiving a resonance boost when doing so. If you want to use only one
filter sweep the unsed filter's cutoff out of audible range, ie 22khtz for the 12db and 44khtz for the
24db filter
Not sure why it sounds sweeter, but I think this trick must be adding some 2nd harmonics :) In any
case its an extra addition to your sonic armoury
12.5 working around the filter 2 resonance bass drop:
(good for juno style basses)
Posted by Colin:
One of the things that annoy me about the filters is that the volume drops as you sweep the filter
cutoff down, making the bass drop out. Its especially annoying when you try to get those Roland
Juno bass sounds. Well I fixed it!
What you do is set all the envelopes to analog triggering mode. Then set the VCA env to a basic
gate setup, just attack, decay 1 and sustain on. Then set Sustain 100 and all stage shapes to Log3.
Modulate ENV3 sustain level with the filter ENV2
using these settings - Level -50, offset 0. Set Engine optimiser to Fast envelopes
and set ENV2 and ENV3 release to 16-20ms to remove the click or you can leave for authentic Juno
click :)
Now the bass sustain will be as loud as the decay portion!
To get the Roland sound, set the filters to notch mode set FIL2 level on the Post mixer to 80, and
then FIL1 LPF to 50, and set its cutoff to anywhere from 10-15khtz depending on how much top end
you want :) You can turn on keytrack and resonance on to "EQ" the sound. Now your set to rock the
