5.2 Compressed Air
System
It is important that the supply of compressed
air be clean and dry and at 80 psi (550 kPa). All air
is filtered before it is used. The major components
of the pneumatic system are:
Air Filter/Regulators
Air Pressure Switch
Air Reservoir
Air Valves/Air Valve Solenoids
Air Cylinders
Flow Controls
Air Bars
Pneumatic Clutch/Brake
Air Filter/Regulators
Because the condition of the compressed air
is so important, the machine includes a filter
unit equipped with a drain (Figure 5-9, A). This
helps keep the air clean and dry. This unit must
be serviced weekly for peak efficiency.
Air pressure regulators (Figure 5-9, B, Figure
5-10, A) are used to control the air pressure used
to perform various functions. The table below
lists the recommended setting for each regulator.
These can be adjusted to meet specific processing
needs.
A Main/High Pressure 80 psi (550 kPa)
B Tail Air Bar Pressure 30-45 psi
(205-310 kPa)
C Spreader Clamp
Counterpressure
50 psi (345 kPa)
D Clutch Pressure 60 psi (415 kPa)
E All Clamps Close Pressure 60 psi (415 kPa)
Air Pressure Switch
The air pressure switch (Figure 5-9, C), located
in the right front endframe, ensures that the unit
has air supplied at an adequate pressure to operate
properly.
If air pressure supplied to the unit falls below
60 psi (415 kPa), the switch closes and a “low air
pressure” message displays in the CHI panel.
