61 Tempest®900 4-Channel Wireless Intercom System
Master Mode
Master Mode is a Tempest BaseStaon funcon that allows mulple BaseStaons to share audio without the presence of
an external hardwired intercom system.
It is necessary to use Master Mode when two or more BaseStaons are connected with the 2-Wire interface, and no
external power source is present. Master Mode provides necessary system power to the 2-Wire hybrid circuing in each
of the connected Tempest BaseStaons. When an external 2-Wire intercom system is connected to Tempest, the external
2-Wire intercom system provides the required power and system terminaon and Master Mode is automacally disabled.
On the BaseStaon that will be set to Master Mode, set the 2-Wire Intercom Type Select slide switches to the Clear-Com
posion. Master Mode only works in Clear-Com mode. If “RTS” or “BAL” is selected, an aempt to set the BaseStaon as
master will result in an error message. If the slide switch is changed from Clear-Com to RTS or BAL, Master Mode will turn
OFF, and it will be necessary to return to the “Mul-Base Seng” menu to re-enable Master Mode.
On slave BaseStaons, set the slide switches to Clear-Com.
On each BaseStaon, set the shared intercom channel(s) to the 2-Wire mode. Master Mode only works for channels
selected for 2-Wire connecon.
Connect the appropriate intercom channel(s) of each BaseStaon that will share audio using the 3-pin XLR male and female
connectors on the back of the BaseStaon.
Complete all sengs and connecons before acvang Master Mode. Set one BaseStaon to Master Mode. Master Mode
sengs are found at the “Set Base as Master” screen under the “Mul-Base Sengs” main menu selecon. It is only
possible to set one BaseStaon as Master. The leer “M” will appear in the top line of the BaseStaon display, to the right
of the BaseStaon name, when Master Mode is acve. An aempt to set a second BaseStaon as master, will result in an
error message. It does not maer which BaseStaon in a linked series is set to Master Mode. Note: previous versions of
Tempest rmware displayed Master Mode with the word “Master” in the top line.
Slave BaseStaons – those not set as master – detect the master BaseStaon as a Clear-Com connecon.
An aempt to set a BaseStaon to Master Mode while connected to a 2-Wire system, will result in an error message. If a
BaseStaon has “Set Base As Master” rst turned ON, and an external hard wired intercom system is connected later, the
Tempest BaseStaon will turn OFF Master Mode.
The “Set Base As Master” seng will remain ON through a power cycle.
