BPG columns are equipped with wetted components of stainless steel and must there-
fore be appropriately maintained when exposed to NaCl during chromatographic
processes. If a process incorporates the use of NaCl solutions it is essential that the
column be thoroughly rinsed to remove any residual NaCl. It is recommended that a
water rinse of at least five column volumes be used. Water is the preferred rinse solu-
tion due to the solubility properties of NaCl in water verses other possible rinsing solu-
tions like ethanol solution.
The rinsing protocol should use at least five column volumes of purified water to assure
optimal removal of residual chloride ions, which can be corrosive to stainless steel over
time.
