9. Reassemble the drive in reverse order.
10. Replace the drive and media and return the failed drive.
Manually Removing a Half High LTO-5/LTO-6/LTO-7/LTO-8/LTO-
9 Tape Cartridge
Notes:
1. The best solution for recovering data on a damaged cartridge is to send it to IBM for professional data recovery.
2. Before using this procedure, you must have exhausted all other means of removing the tape cartridge from the drive.
Use this procedure only if you cannot remove the tape cartridge by using any other means.
3. Determine from the customer if the cartridge contains critical customer data. If the cartridge contains sensitive data
that cannot leave the site, inform the customer that certain failure conditions diagnostics will be performed to test the
drive for continued use.
4. The following removal procedures can destroy customer data! Use extreme care when handling or removing the
customer’s tape cartridges to minimize tape damage and lost data.
5. DO NOT TOUCH the magnetic tape or tape path. Both are extremely sensitive to the oil and salt from your skin. Use
clean, lint-free gloves when working around magnetic tape or the tape path components.
6. Electrostatic-sensitive components: Consider using an ESD Kit.
7. After you remove the tape cartridge, advise the customer to copy the data to another cartridge and to remove this tape
cartridge from service.
8. Do not use power tools or magnetic tools to perform this procedure.
9. To avoid contamination and electrostatic-discharge damage to the drive, never touch the head or electronic components
inside the drive.
10. If you cannot remove the cartridge from the drive using the following procedures, contact your next level of support.
11. The cartridge will not eject automatically at the end of a mid-tape recovery. Instead, the tape will be reloaded into the
drive and may result in the loss of data.
12. INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE DRIVE ARE DELICATE AND CAN EASILY BE DAMAGED. EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION
WHEN MANUALLY REMOVING A CARTRIDGE THAT WILL NOT EJECT AFTER PRESSING THE UNLOAD BUTTON.
Attention: The procedure for manually removing a tape cartridge could damage your tape cartridge, the tape drive, or both. Use
this procedure only after you have:
1. Turned the power to the 7226 Storage Enclosure off and on again to clear potential hang conditions.
2. If available, issued a command from your host system command menu to attempt to unload the cartridge.
3. Disconnected the 7226 Storage Enclosure from the system, and turned the power to the 7226 Storage Enclosure on and
off again several times.
4. Attempted an emergency eject of the cartridge by pressing and holding the unload button for at least 5 seconds.
Use the following steps to access the tape drive mechanism. Once the drive cover has been removed, start the procedure to
manually remove a data cartridge from the tape drive. If this procedure is performed, replace the drive, discard the used
media, and use new media.
1. Remove the drive from the 7226 Storage Enclosure (see Replacing a Tape Drive Feature or a Removable Disk Drive
Feature).
2. Remove the front bezel (the bezel snaps on) by completing the following substeps:
a. Use a small screwdriver to press the bezel tabs on each side of the drive.
b. Snap the tabs off of the drive assembly.
c. Remove the bezel from the unit.
3. Remove the cover of the drive mechanism by completing the following substeps:
a. Remove the four screws (1 in Figure 1) holding the cover to the drive chassis. Two screws are located on each
side of the drive.
b. Remove the cover by lifting it up and off the chassis.
