RF driver An NKT Photonics External RF Driver (ERD) unit is connected to the SELECT’s RF1
input. The ERD generates the necessary RF signals to drive a single AOTF
crystal. The RF signals generated by the driver are configured to drive an AOTF
for up to 8 output wavelengths. For a SELECT equipped with dual AOTFs and a
single ERD, only one AOTF can be configured for operation at one time. To
operate both AOTFs simultaneously, an additional ERD is connected to the
SELECT’s RF2 input. The External RF Driver is described in “External RF driver” on
page 24.
Figure 2 shows a SELECT system equipped with dual AOTFs and dual ERDs. All
units communicate through the External bus system and each ERD transmits an
RF signal over coaxial cable to the SELECT. Each AOTF of the SELECT receives
an RF signal from one of the two ERDs.The RF signals act on the crystal AOTFs
tuning them to filter the configured wavelengths emitted from the optical outputs.
