Onceyouhaveestablishedanoverallpinknoiselevel,adjusttheRangecontrolsothatyoucansee
theentirespectrumeasilyonthedisplay,normallyinthevicinityof70–80dB.AdjusttheTarget
controlsothatthebandwiththelowestlevel(notcountingveryloworveryhighfrequenciesthat
areclearlybeyondtheabilityofthespeakertoreproduce)issituatedatthetopofthebrightred
targetwindow.Thiswillallowyoutoreduce,ratherthanboost,mostofthefrequencieswiththe
parametricEQ.
WhenreadingtheRTA,itisimportanttoknowwhatpeaksanddipsareactualrepresentationsof
“problemareas”withthespeaker/roomcombinationandwhicharemicrophoneplacement
anomalies.Ifyoumovethemicrophonejustslightlyandtheproblemareamagicallycorrectsitself,
you’reseeingsuchaplacementskewedreading.Alittleexperimentationwillquicklyrevealthis.
Onceyouhavefinalizedthemicplacement,it’stimetobegincorrectingthingswiththePEQ.
UsingtheParametricEQtoSmoothThingsOut
Methodsofequalizingspeakersintheirroomsvary,butgenerallyspeaking,usingthefewest
numberofbandsofEQtoachievethedesiredresultispreferred.Cutting(reducing)frequenciesis
usuallypreferredtoboosting(increasing)them,althoughsometimesboostingacertainrangeisnot
easilyavoided.Rememberthatthereareatotalof12availablebandsofEQavailabletoyou–6in
the“EQ1”menuand6moreinthe“EQ2”menu.
Weassumethatifyou’vegottenthisfar,youhaveageneralideaofhowthecontrolsofa
parametricequalizerwork,butasaquickreview:
TheGaincontroldetermineshowmuchthespecifiedfrequencyrangeisamplified
orattenuated,expressedindecibels.
TheBandwidthcontroldetermineshowwideornarrowarangeoffrequencieswill
beaffected,measuredinoctaves.
TheCenterFrequencycontroldetermineswhatfrequencywilllieinthemiddleof
theadjustmentcurve,expressedinHz.
Youwillbeabletoidentifywhereyourspeakersstarttorolloffintermsoffrequencyresponse
(especiallyonthelowend)prettyquickly.Youcan’tovercomepurephysicswithanequalizer,and
smallspeakerswillneverreproducebasswiththesameauthorityaslargerones,sothere’snopoint
intryingtogivea15dBboostat30Hztosmallmonitorsinthehopesthatyou’llgettheequivalentof
afreesubwoofer.(What’sfrequentlymoreeffectivewithbassshyspeakersistamingtheoften
overboostedmidbassthatmanufacturersdialininthehopesthatyouthinkyouhavemorelow
endthanyoudo).
AsyoustudytheRTA,werecommendidentifyingandcorrectinganyglaringpeaksorvalleysovera
relativelynarrowrangesoffrequenciesfirsttotakecareofany“hotspots.”Then,workyourway
outtomakingbroaderchangestotheoverallcurve.
