Activity 2 - Personal Competencies
Communications unit
The Atlantic 85 is fitted with a communications system
which allows the crew to talk between themselves
(Conference mode), talk with other parties over the
VHF radio, and monitor the directional finder (DF) using
the headsets fitted within the helmets. A control unit is
provided at each seat and when plugged in, the user can
adjust the headset volume, microphone function and
select what can be heard through the headset.
The VOLUME control adjusts the individual headset
volume, not the VHF speaker. The volume should
be reduced to the minimum before connecting or
disconnecting headsets.
The MICROPHONE control is used for the
following functions:
MIC OFF - Disable the microphone (recommended
when no helmet is connected).
CONFERENCE - Enables communication with
other crew.
RADIO ONLY - Speak over the VHF radio without the
other crew hearing the transmission.
It is recommended to leave the control in
CONFERENCE’ as this will allow the crew to
communicate freely as well as speak over the VHF radio
with all crew hearing the VHF communication.
The RADIO control is used to select which radio is
heard through the headset. A’ is used to monitor the
VHF radio, ‘B’ is used to monitor the DF and ‘C’ is not
normally used.
Battery compartment
The Atlantic 85 is powered by four odyssey extreme 40
batteries and runs a 12 volt system. The four batteries are
split into two banks which power both engines individually
and a range of electrical equipment on board.
In the event of one power bank failing, the
‘couple batteries’ button on the helm console can
be used to link both battery banks and power the
boat components.
Throttles
The two throttles control their respective engine. They can
be moved out of neutral by depressing the red interlock
catch, then pushing the throttle forward or astern for
the desired gear. Once in gear, release the inlerlock. It is
important to release the interlock to allow it to click into
neutral, rather than going straight through the gear box as
this could result in damage. The VHF “push to talk” button
is located on the port throttle and can be used for the
helm to transmit over the VHF.
