Mooring
Mooring to a buoy
There are occasions when a vessel has to moor up. It
is therefore essential that all crew members have an
understanding of how to pick up a mooring buoy safely
and correctly.
Definition of a mooring buoy
A buoy of special construction that is attached to
the seabed, by chains, anchors or weights, to which a
vessel can be secured.
Considerations when mooring
Weather conditions, strength and direction of wind
and tide should all be assessed prior to approaching the
mooring. Look at other vessels attached to mooring buoys
to see which way they lie.
Good communication between the crew and the person in
charge is necessary to indicate the direction and distance
of the mooring buoy from the vessel.
