Activity 9 - Propulsion and Auxiliary Systems
Idle speed controller (ISC)
A valve in the ISC opens a small bypass circuit that allows
air to bypass the throttle. Increasing the volume of air
that flows through the bypass circuit around the throttle
increases idle speed. Reducing the bypass airflow decreases
idle speed.
When the engine is cold, the ISC valve opens to supply air,
increasing engine speed. Once warmed up, the valve closes
to reduce engine speed to idle. When rapidly decelerating,
the valve opens quickly to prevent stalling.
